Hybrid chickens are a breed produced by professional hatcheries of specially selected pure breeds designed to produce a hen who will lay all year round, and be strong and healthy - basically the best qualities of pure bred chickens are selected and mixed to produce the hybrid. They are an ideal choice for a first time chicken keeper as they are usually easy, docile and friendly. When deciding on which breed to choose I always recommend not making a final decision until you come and see the hens. Not only do they look very different 'in the flesh' there is a huge variety of colouring and temperament within each breed. For example most Ambers will be really friendly and calm, but the odd bird can be quite nervous and not like human company at all. You can get a good indication of what they are likely to be like when you see them and see how they interact with us. SUSSEX
The Sussex hybrid is a very attractive medium to larger sized, traditional style white bird with black hackle feathers around the neck and on the tail. Derived from the traditional pure breed dual purpose Light Sussex. They are capable of laying approximately 260 light to mid brown eggs per year.
SILVER SUSSEX
A slightly larger hen also often known as 'Pied'. They are similar in size and shape to a Sussex but have the reverse colouring. Usually a nice friendly hen and good layers. RHODE ROCK
The Rhode Rock is a sex-linked Hybrid bred from the Rhode Island Red and a Barred Plymouth Rock. They are capable of laying approximately 300 brown eggs per year.
BLUEBELL
The Bluebell is a very attractive larger chicken in shades of light to dark grey/blue. They are a cross between a Maran and a Rhode Island Red. They are capable of laying approximately 260+ eggs per year, the eggs are brown often with an unusual 'plum' tint.
BARRED ROCK & SPECKLEDY A traditional farmyard 'speckled' hen. Very similar in looks, the Barred Rock is a modern hybrid based on pure breed Barred Plymouth Rocks whereas the Speckledy is from a traditional Maran chicken. They are reliable layers and are capable of producing 270 brown eggs.
RANGER/BLACKTAIL ![]()
Based on a cross between a Rhode Island Red and a Light Sussex, the Rangers/Blacktails are very easy to manage and are usually very friendly birds. Blacktails are a chestnut brown with black accents on their neck and tail feathers, Rangers are similar but with white accents on their neck and tail feathers. Very good layers capable of producing 300+ eggs per year, an ideal first bird.
AMBER
Very good laying chickens - Ambers vary in colour from a cream/champagne colour to a cream with red/brown markings. They are capable of producing around 330 eggs per year. They are generally friendly, calm and gentle hens and great with children.
COLUMBINE
An unusual and relatively new hybrid hen based on the Legbar. These chickens have an 80% chance of laying a blue/green egg, the remainder will lay a pastel coloured egg. Columbines can have a reputation for being a little bit nervy, some undoubtedly are, but I have found that many of them are actually very calm and friendly - just observe them for a while when you come to choose, and you can pick out the calm hens. There is a huge variety in colour and markings and they are a very attractive, unusual bird. Most have distinctive 'pompoms' on top of their heads.
WHITE STAR & CORAL
White Stars and Corals are very similar in appearance. White Stars are lovely dainty little chickens based on Leghorns, they are very pretty when fully mature and have large floppy red combs. They are very inquisitive and can become very friendly, but if they don't want to be picked up they can run fast! One of my favourite hens as they can be so cheeky. Corals are slightly heavier and usually much calmer. They lay a surprisingly large egg, are excellent layers and are capable of producing 300+ eggs per year. White Stars eggs are china white, Corals lay a cream egg. COPPER BLACK
Copper Blacks are very attractive chickens based on pure breed Copper Black Marans. They are very similar in looks to Rhode Rocks, but can be distinguished by their dark leg colour and copper neck feathers (rather than the gold neck feathers of Rhode Rocks). Some have feathered legs - a throwback to their copper black ancestors. Good layers of a darker brown egg.
EGG LAYING COMPARISON The chickens are capable of laying approximately this amount of eggs under optimal conditions (temperature and daylight controlled), but please be aware many factors will influence how many eggs they lay - they are not machines!
PURE BREEDS We only have small amounts of pure breeds for sale every year. As they are seasonal layers we don't usually start having chicks until Easter. They are not prolific layers so there are only a set amount of eggs we can incubate every year!
LAVENDER ORPINGTONS
The Lavender is a very rare colour of Orpington. These birds are beautiful, big and fluffy. The colour is a very soft Lavender/grey and is produced by crossing a black Orpington who carries the Lavender gene (called a 'Split gene') with another bird carrying the Lavender gene. I am currently crossing the Lavender birds to black Orpingtons to introduce new bloodlines to my flock and increase the size of the birds. They are naturally very tame and docile - true gentle giants. BUFF ORPINGTONS
Buff Orpingtons are probably the best known colour of Orpington and they vary from a pale creamy, caramel colour to a darker ginger. I have a superb quality cockerel (pictured above) who was sourced from show stock, as well as some very good quality hens. Whether you choose Lavender or Buff Orpington they all share the wonderful, friendly, docile character common to Orpingtons.
BLACK COCHIN
I have a fantastic, huge Frizzle Cochin cockerel and two show quality black smooth Orpington hens. They are all from show stock. Cochins are lovely docile birds with feathered legs. They are suitable for keeping in areas with low fencing as they rarely attempt to take off the ground!
PARTRIDGE COCHINS
Large fowl Partridge Cochins are a very rare colour of Cochin and much in demand. I have a trio who are all very gentle and friendly.
VORWERKS
Vorwerks are a rare breed. They are available in bantam or as large fowl, mine are large. They are very eye catching with their gold body feathers and black head and neck. They are flighty birds and a little nervy, and don't like being handled.
PEKINS
I have Millefleur pekins. These are really sweet little bantam hens and are often very friendly and inquisitive.
